A recognised branch of University and College Union. Built by members, for members.
University and College Union

Essex UCU is a local branch of the University and College Union, the largest post-school union in the world.

Essex UCU is formally recognised by the University of Essex management to represent all staff employed within the university at grade 7 and above — academics, academic-related, professional services staff and ALs/GLAs. We are a vibrant, active branch with many hundreds of members.

UCU has over 120,000 members across further and higher education. The Essex branch is where that national strength becomes local: casework, departmental organisation, industrial action, health and safety, equality, pensions, anti-casualisation.

Officers are elected annually at the branch AGM. Roles are voluntary; some receive facility time. Health and safety reps and union learning reps have a legal right to time off. Four members can be co-opted after the AGM. The committee meets regularly to set strategy. Members decide the line in general meetings.
